The Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS) is a globally recognised PG diploma in surgery. Granted by the Royal Colleges of Surgery, it is the highest of standards when it comes to the practice of surgery. With an in-depth testing of the candidates’ medical knowledge, surgical acumen, and clinical management skills, it ensures the competency of anyone pursuing an international surgical career. As an entry level examination to surgery, it is also the gateway for healthcare professionals to qualify for higher specialty training, and more.
The MRCS examination is given in two parts, namely Part A, and Part B.
MRCS Part A: The MRCS Part A examination is a test of medical knowledge of the candidate, given in two papers in a single day. The first paper, ‘Applied Basic Sciences’ , consists of 180 multiple choice questions, and is sat in the morning session. The latter half of the day tests the candidates with a ‘Principles of Surgery in General’ paper consisting of 120 questions. The AM paper is three hours long, whereas the PM or afternoon exam runs two hours long.
MRCS Part B OSCE: Part B is the MRCS examination that tests candidates in their applied and diagnostic skills. This is an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) which presents candidates with 17 different stations of clinical scenarios. Taking about 9 minutes each, candidates are to take these stations one by one, showcasing their knowledge, diagnostic skills, and clinical management through this examination.
Candidates are required to complete their MRCS Part B assessment within seven years of passing the MRCS Part A examination.
