MRCS Exam Overview
MRCS Part A
This first step evaluates theoretical knowledge in applied basic sciences and principles of surgery. The exam is divided into two papers:
- Paper 1
- Duration: 3 hours
- Number of Questions: 180
- Paper 2
- Duration: 2 hours
- Number of Questions: 120
MRCS Part B – General Surgery
MRCS Part B is the final step in achieving the prestigious Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS). This Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) evaluates your practical knowledge, clinical skills, and communication abilities, confirming your readiness for surgical practice.
The MRCS Part B exam includes 17 examination stations and 2 preparatory stations. These stations assess key domain areas critical to surgical practice, including:
- Anatomy
- Surgical Pathology
- Applied Surgical Science
- Critical Care
- Communication Skills for giving and receiving information
- History Taking
- Clinical and Procedural Skills
Each station lasts 9 minutes, providing an opportunity to demonstrate your expertise across real-world scenarios, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and clinical application.
