About MRCS Part B General Surgery

MRCS Part B GS is the second and final hurdle in the journey towards achieving the ‘MRCS’ postnominal. It is an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), which is designed in a way that tests your clinical, procedural, and communication skills comprehensively. Rather than testing your surgical knowledge alone, this exam evaluates how well you can apply your knowledge in practical scenarios.

MRCS Part B GS: Exam structure

Number of stations: 17

Duration per station: 9 minutes (+1 minute reading time)

Total duration: 3 hours and 30 minutes approximately

The stations are divided into Broad Content Areas (BCAs)

Applied Knowledge (8 stations- 160 marks)

  • Anatomy and surgical pathology (5 stations)
  • Applied surgical science and critical care (3 stations)

Applied Skills (9 stations- 180 marks)

  • Clinical and procedural skills (5 stations)
  • Communication skills (4 stations)

In addition to the content areas, the MRCS Part B OSCE evaluates four key domains, such as knowledge, skills, competence and professional characteristics. These four domains are assessed via all 17 stations.

That’s all about the MRCS Part B General Surgery exam. As the exam is challenging, securing your slot early gives you the best chance to plan your preparation effectively.
