The MRCS Part B is the final step in the journey towards becoming a member of one of the four Royal Colleges in the UK and Ireland. It is well known for its challenging OSCE-style format. The exam tests your clinical skills, procedural knowledge, and communication skills under pressure through a series of Objective Structured Clinical Examination stations.

You must follow a solid preparation plan and knowing what to focus on in the final months is also very important. Here in this blog, we will take you through a detailed checklist to help you pass the exam confidently.

Understanding the exam format

The MRCS Part B exam includes 17 stations and each evaluates various competencies essential for surgical practice. Each station lasts about 9 minutes, including the reading and response time.

Preparation checklist

Applied anatomy: Have a clear understanding of the anatomical structures relevant to surgical procedures. Utilise resources like RCS’s applied anatomy courses, which offer modules on the abdomen, thorax, and limbs.

Clinical and procedural skills: Regularly practise clinical examinations, surgical procedures, and emergency management scenarios. Simulation-based training can be highly beneficial for MRCS OSCE.

Communication skills: Effective communication is important in OSCEs. Engage in role-playing exercises to improve your skills in patient interactions, informed consent and delivering difficult news.

Participate in mock OSCEs: Attending mock OSCE sessions is a really good way to improve your confidence and it helps identify your weak areas. The RCS offers practice courses that focus on anatomy, pathology, and communication stations.

Time management: Practice finishing tasks within the given time to ensure efficiency on the real exam day.
