All about the MRCS Part B ENT exam

The MRCS Part B ENT exam is the gateway for doctors aspiring to excel in the field of ENT surgery. The primary aim of this objective structured clinical examination is to test the breadth of knowledge, clinical, and communication skills of the aspirants and ensure that they have gained the necessary expertise to succeed in their careers. Aspirants who have successfully completed the MRCS Part A exam can only sit for the Part B ENT exam.
The Intercollegiate MRCS (ENT) is an Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE) lasting approximately three and a half hours. The exam consists of up to 28 active stations and a number of preparation stations and rest stations. The 28 active stations include approximately five stations designed to assess clinical skills, clinical examination, clinical history-taking, and communication skills.

Proof of Identity
Candidates must bring proof of identity to the examination. This proof of identity must be an official document, such as a current passport or driver’s license, that includes the candidate’s name, signature, and photograph.

Dress Code
There is a standard dress code for all stations to ease the pressure on candidates. Candidates should keep their arms bare below the elbow and should not wear any jewelry on their hands or wrists. Additionally, ties are also prohibited. Candidates with religious or cultural reasons for not following this code for all stations will be required to adhere to the dress code for those stations involving the physical examination of patients/actors.

Briefing
All candidates will undergo a detailed briefing before the commencement of the MRCS (ENT) OSCE examination. It is very important that candidates listen carefully to the information given at the briefing. Make sure to follow all the instructions given to you. The briefing will cover the checking and issuing of candidate numbers, the layout of the stations, rest stations, the candidate’s starting position, timing arrangements, and arrangements for the emergency evacuation of the center.

Equipment
Candidates are not required to bring any equipment for the stations. All equipment required for the tasks set in each station will be supplied. There are a number of stations that use tablet computers to display a particular image. In the unlikely event of a malfunction, candidates should immediately make an invigilator aware of the issue, and another copy of the image will be supplied.

Electronic and Communication Devices
Candidates must not carry mobile phones or other electronic communication devices during the circuit. Any candidate found in possession of an electronic/communication device after the start of the examination will be subject to disciplinary action.
