RCS will close the booking window for the above-mentioned exam on 30 October 2025. The exam is scheduled to take place on 21st January 2026 at test centres across the globe. What is MRCS Part A?

The MRCS Part A is the first hurdle you need to overcome to achieve the ‘MRCS’ tag. It tests candidates’ understanding of applied basic sciences and principles of surgery in general.

The MRCS Part A is a 5-hour-long MCQ-based examination. It consists of two papers, namely Applied Basic Sciences (ABS paper) and Principles of Surgery in General (PosG). Both papers can be taken on the same day. The ABS paper consists of 180 MCQs and is three hours long, while the PoSG paper has 120 questions, and you will get two hours to complete it.

MRCS Part A January 2026: Who can apply?

  • Must hold a medical degree accepted by the GMC (UK) or Medical Council (Ireland)
  • If not on the GMC/Irish Medical Council register, must send the original or an authenticated copy of the medical degree by email to SurgicalEligibility@rcseng.ac.uk
  • Send documents within 2 weeks of booking the exam

For candidates in Egypt

 To take the MRCS Part A exam in Egypt:

  • Must have completed your internship before booking
  • Provide official evidence in English translation
  • Email it along with your application
Exam fee

The MRCS Part A exam fee is £625. However, there will be an additional 18% tax for candidates appearing for this exam in India. So, the exam fee in India is £737.50 (£625 + 18% tax).
